Preventing Breast Cancer Is Possible

Breast Cancer AwarenessBreast cancer awareness means different things to different people.  For the month of October, you can’t even turn on a football game without seeing a goal post wrapped in hot pink or football players wearing pink socks.

But let’s get real.  Breast cancer, like all cancers are better prevented than cured.  I think we can all agree we would rather NOT get cancer during our life time.  But the reality is, many don’t feel we have a say in the ‘Dis-Ease’ process.

We get handed illness – we don’t choose illness.

Can we hand ourselves HEALTH?   I believe we can!

Prevention is the cure!  Everyday, we can give ourselves health.  In the foods we eat, the thoughts we focus on and the life we create.

Regarding specifically ‘Breast Cancer’ check out one way to focus on health Continue reading “Preventing Breast Cancer Is Possible”

A New Chinese Herb For Breast Cancer Chemotherapy

Recent research has isolated a compound from the Chinese herb called Dichroa febrifuga or Chang Shan, we in a laboratory setting has been used successfully to treat breast cancer cells.   The study lead researcher Mei Ling Jin show the compound known as halofuginone caused the breast cancer cells to die and inhibited the growth of  new cancer cells.

The results of the study mean halofuginone is a very promising chemotherapy for breast cancer patients.

The study was published in the International Journal of Oncology.

Balance Your Hormones With Green Tea

green tea benefitsMost of us have heard that green tea is good for us, but why? The answer is that drinking green tea provides many health benefits, including:

  1. heart health— drinking tea is associated with lowering one's risk of heart attack and stroke
  2. bone health— antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of green tea help diminish bone loss
  3. oral health—  green tea is a natural flouride source which helps decrease tooth decay
  4. weight loss— the catechins in green tea produces thermogenesis (heat in the body related to burning calories)
  5. cancer prevention— the catechins in tea prevent cell mutation and reduce tumor formation

Just as important, and the subject of this blog, is that green tea can help balance your hormones. The biochemicals in green tea can change a woman's estrogen metabolism, and as you may know, estrogen dominance is undeniably linked to breast cancer.

Researchers, led by Dr. Barbara Fuhrman of the NIH's (National Institutes of Health) Cancer Institute, tested urinary estrogens and metabolites among 181 Japanese American women from California and Hawaii. Of these healthy women, 72 were potmenopausal. Along with urinary testing, personal interviews were taken, and each woman's consumption of green tea, black tea, coffee and soda were recorded, measured, and adjusted in respect to caffeine consumption.

Amazinglypostmenopausal women who drank green tea daily had 20% less urinary estrone and 40% less urinary estradiol levels (meaning these women metabolized estrogen better). It was found that black tea did not produce the same results as green tea, and interestingly, caffeine consumption did not change the results.

Even more interesting, and perhaps concerning for pre-menopausal women, was the result that the estrogen levels of pre-menopausal women did not respond to green tea at all.

So, what does it all mean? What should you do with this information?

Well, if you are postmenopausal, drink green tea! It will help metabolize estrogen and can help in the prevention of breast cancer.

If you are pre-menopausal, drink green tea! Even though it will not have the same cancer-reducing results, green tea still has wonderful health benefits. Try other, more natural remedies for PMS symptoms, instead of using the birth control pill (which increases risk of breast cancer).

If you are experiencing symptoms of the change in life we call "menopause" (technically it is "perimenopause"), drink green tea! Remember to steer clear of HRT (hormone replacement therapy) because it too is associated with increased risk of breast cancer. Instead, try Menopause Relief Herb Pack for uncomfortable symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweating, insomnia, headaches, and mood swings.

Hormone Use Increases Breast Cancer Risk

Newly released research sugherbs for menopausegests that the long-term use of any type of hormones (this includes the birth control pill) can increase the risk of breast cancer. Women taking  long-term hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopause symptoms are at an even greater risk.

Research has already shown that taking birth control pills with combined estrogen and progestin, the most common type, can increase breast cancer risk.

The outcome from this new study states any type of hormones (i.e. birth control pills, HRT ) after many years of use, results in cancer.

This new study tracked the health of over 100,000 registered nurses and found that use of any kind of hormones for 10 years (or more) raised the chances of developing breast cancer. "There's a continued increase in risk with longer durations of use and there does not appear to be a plateau," said study leader Dr. Wendy Chen of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

There are natural and safe answers to menopausal hot flashes, night sweats and other menopause symptoms.Traditional Chinese herbal medicine has been used for generations of women to elliminate the uncomfortable symptoms on menopause such as hot flashes and night sweats. See our Menopause Relief Herb Pack here.

The hormone picture has been confusing and now doctors say women should use the lowest dose needed for the shortest time possible.

– Estrogen use with progesterone for 10 to 14.9 years had an 88% higher incidence of breast cancer

– Estrogen use with progesterone for 15 to 19.9 years had an increase risk of “more than twofold”

– Estrogen use alone for 10 to 14.9 years had a 22% increased risk of breast cancer

– Estrogen alone for 15 to 19.9 years had a 43% increased risk of breast cancer

"It's hard to be surprised that if you keep taking it, sooner or later it's going to raise risk," said Dr. Robert Clarke of Georgetown University's Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.

New Research Says Breast Cancer Triggered By Artificial Hormone Progestin

Another day and another friend/mother/sister/daughter diagnosed with breast cancer.  Today breast cancer is affecting one in every eight women sometime during their lifetime  in the USA, Europe and the UK.   Looking around at my friends, family and extended family we need no reminders of the impact of these statistics. But there is good news, actually GREAT news— medical researchers at the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna identified a key protein that triggers breast cancer and in December 2012 received a grant of $7.4 million from the USA Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program for ongoing research.

Working for the last ten years, the research team has been able to show the synthetic female sex hormone progestin used in HRT and contraceptive pills can trigger RANKL (a protein found in breast cells).  As a consequence of this trigger, mammary cells start to divide and multiply and fail to die when they should. Moreover, stem cells in the breast become able to renew themselves, ultimately resulting in breast cancer.

The research around the artificial sex hormone progestin, used in hormone replacement therapy, HRT, and in birth control pills has been the center of  work for  Professor Josef Penninger, (IMBA director) who found the first genetic evidence that this protein RANKL is the master regulator of healthy bones and breast cell multiplication.

“Ten years ago we formulated the hypothesis that RANKL might be involved in breast cancer and it took us a long time to develop systems to prove this idea”, says Prof. Josef Penninger. ” I have to admit it completely surprised me just how massive the effects of the system were. Millions of women take progesterone derivatives in contraceptives and for hormonal replacement therapy. Since our results show that the RANKL system is an important molecular link between a synthetic sex hormone and breast tumors, one day women may be able to reduce their risk by taking blocking medicines in advance to prevent breast cancer”.

Alternative answers are available for women suffering with menopausal symptoms and want relief from hot flashes and night sweats without adding artificial hormones to their body.  Natural solutions used in Traditional Chinese Medicine are available that are safe and are made from natural plant sources, not artificial hormones.

Alternative birth control methods beyond the pill include the  IUD's  without hormones, condoms, diaphragm,  natural rhythm method and permanent birth control in the form of tubal litigation.

The research results presented here was an  international collaboration between lead researchers at IMBA and scientists at the Medical University of Vienna; the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Sydney, Australia; the Ontario Cancer Institute, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada; Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard Medical School and the Ragon Institute of MGH/MIT and Harvard, Boston, USA; the Institute for Genetics, Centre for Molecular Medicine (CMMC), and Cologne Excellence Cluster (CECAD), University of Cologne, Germany; University College London, UK; and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany.

New Menopause Treatment, Not So Fast

Menopause Relief by Pacific Herbs relieves menopause symptomsI'm happy to report that a new menopause treatment will most likely not be approved by the FDA. A panel of advisers to the Food and Drug Administration overwhelmingly voted against a Depomed drug called Gabapentin to treat hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause. Apparently, the benefits were heavily outweighed by the risks involved with this would be prescription menopause treatment.

Drug makers have been experimenting with non-hormonal treatments for menopause ever since they lost considerable market share with HRT drugs once they were proven to increase the risk for breast cancer and heart disease.

The FDA panelists overwhelmingly recommended the FDA reject the use of generically known Gabapentin pointing out that three company studies failed to show a significant reduction in hot flashes over 12 weeks. Patients also experienced side effects including dizziness, fatigue and balance problems. Gabapentin already carries a warning label that it can increase the frequency of suicidal thoughts.  The FDA often follows the advice of panelists although it is not required to do so.

Adverse Reactions with the Birth Control Pills Yaz and Yasmin

Yaz birth control pillIn Canada, 600 adverse reactions and 23 deaths have been reported between 2007 and February 28th, 2013 among women taking the birth-control pills (BCPs) Yaz and Yasmin (recorded by Health Canada and first reported by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation). In Canada, 600 adverse reactions and 23 deaths have been reported between 2007 and February 28th, 2013 among women taking the birth-control pills (BCPs) Yaz and Yasmin (recorded by Health Canada and first reported by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation).

Adverse reactions for both products were most commonly found to affect the nervous system, vascular system, respiratory/thoracic/mediastinal systems, and cardiac function. Bayer produces a synthetic progestin called drospirenone, and BCP's containing this sythetic hormone carry a label warning stating that its use increases risk of venus-thromboembolism 1.5 to 3 times higher than other BCP's. (The FDA added the warnig in 2012.)

Health Canada released a statement that they view the benefits of Yaz and Yasmin outweigh these risks. The safety of contraceptive pills are monitored continually, just like other drugs. However, a woman may decide that the risks are too great, considering there are other viable options available that do not interfere with her hormones. This is especially important information concerning the health and wellness of young women who take the birth control pill for bad pms and period pain. Pacific herbs has a great remedy for menstrual cramps called PMS relief.

The first class-action lawsuit was filed in April against Bayer (producers of Yaz and Yasmin) in Canada and 13 more suits are pending. ln the US, Bayer paid $1.2 billion in settlements in thousands of lawsuits (reported by The Globe).

How To Relieve Menopause Symptoms Whithout HRT (HRT Linked To Breast Cancer)

Breast cancer alternative therapies beyond HRTHow many women do you know that have been diagnosed, are being treated for, have survived, or even lost the battle against breast cancer? The current statistic is that 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer!

Breast cancer is occurring in alarming numbers of American women and nobody, not even the top doctors on the subject i.e. Dr. Susan Love, (who I recently heard at a conference),  have definitive answers regarding the causes.

During menopause, many women turn to HRT for relief. Evidence linking breast cancer with HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) was recently released. This study, the largest ever done, was called the Women's Health Initiative (WHI).  It was first released in 2002 and now, more evidence from researchers following these women have found that HRT significantly increases a woman's risk of being diagnosed with invasive type of breast cancer and cause death.

The new evidence suggests:

  • high dose HRT increased a woman's risk more than low-dose HRT, and
  • combination HRT, both estrogen and progesterone carries an increase risk over estrogen only HRT.

After the initial WHI report was released in 2002, HRT use declined and a drop in breast cancer diagnoses was also evident.

"What's important about this study is that it really provides tremendous clarity regarding the risks of hormone replacement therapy," says Dr. Freya Schnabel, of New York University's Langone Medical Center.

"I think from this point onward any woman who's considering taking hormone replacement therapy will need to genuinely consider these risks," says Schnabel.

What I believe is most important  for women suffering from menopause symptoms such as  hot flashes, night sweats, irritability etc,  is to realize there are other options beyond HRTNatural herbal remedies for menopause have been proven effective and have been used for generations of women.  Women who chose to see health providers such as Acupuncturists, Homeopaths, Naturapaths and other Complementary Medicine practitioners know there are many other options for natural menopause relief.

Women really don't need to suffer with hot flashes, poor sleep and low libido. Natural Menopause Relief does exist and it does work.   If you are suffering with menopause symptoms, learn about other safer options than HRT.

Is This A Trend? Breast Cancer Lawsuits Against HRT and Wyeth

Natural Remedies for Menopause and Birth Control that won't lead to breast cancerBreast cancer has climbed to 1 in every 8 women and now the finger is beginning to point to drug manufacturers. Wyeth and Pfizer have made combination hormone drugs for over 30 years and these HRT drugs (hormone replacement therapy) are commonly used for menopause treatments. About 10,000 cases against these pharmaceutical giants have already been filed and Pfizer has spent nearly $900 million to resolve about half of them.

Some go to trial, others settle more quietly out of court. Just last week, a Utah jury found Wyeth responsible for one woman's breast cancer and awarded her $5 million in compensation.  Utah does not allow for punitive damages.

Studies, such as the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study, released this statement with it's results:  "Women using Hormone Replacement Therapy ("HRT") are more likely to develop breast cancer than those who are not using HRT."

The National Institute of Health completed the Million Women Study in Britain a few years ago. Based on the results, the NIH concluded that the "Current use of HRT is associated with an increased risk of incident and fatal breast cancer; the effect is substantially greater for oestrogen-progestagen combinations than for other types of HRT."

One expert testified that his research showed as many as 15,000 cases of breast cancer per year occurred in women taking the combination hormone drug. Yet the "defense witnesses told you the same thing, the same story line, that Wyeth wanted them to tell you over and over — that no one knows what causes breast cancer," said Russell T. Abney, another attorney representing Okuda. "We are not arguing that Ms. Okuda didn’t have an abnormal cell in her body. What we are arguing is that [estrogen plus progesterone] promoted that abnormal cell to grow."

Women don't have to choose between drugs and cancer for debilitating symptoms of menopause. There are other choices of menopause treatment.
